Volleyball Victory

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -The No. 8 Florida volleyball team completed a weekend series sweep of visiting Arkansas on Saturday night and swept the match against the Razorbacks itself, prevailing 25-16, 25-21, 25-18. The Gators have won nine straight matches dating back to the fall and reach 14-2 overall.

It was also the fourth straight match win for Florida decided in the minimum three sets.

T’ara Ceasar floored 12 kills on 26 attempts and Holly Carlton added 11 kills as Florida hit for an efficient .319 percentage, including .458 in the third set.

The second set was the only one in which the Gators were threatened. Florida turned a 19-17 deficit into a 25-21 win thanks to a closing 8-2 run. Florida sent Arkansas to 11-7 in the SEC.

No. 5 Florida downed No. 16 Florida State, 5-0, behind a one-hit complete-game shutout from Elizabeth Hightower at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium Friday afternoon.

In the Gators’ (14-0) first game against a top 25 opponent, Hightower (7-0) was lights-out in the circle as she turned in her second complete-game one-hit shutout of the season against the sixteenth-ranked Seminoles (10-4).

The Monticello, Fla. native faced 25 total batters and only allowed three walks in addition to the lone hit by Devyn Flaherty in the 6th inning of play.

Hightower was locked into a pitcher’s duel, with FSU’s Caylan Arnold (3-2) up until the 3rd inning when Sarah Longley picked up the Gators’ first hit with a lead-off single to left field.

Florida went on to break the scoreless tie in the 4th inning, thanks to Charla Echols. Echols gave UF a 1-0 lead over FSU when she turned on the 3-2 offering from Arnold and sent it over the right field wall.

The Seminoles went to the bullpen to start the 5th inning and brought in Danielle Watson. Watson was able to get an early double play for the first two outs, but Cheyenne Lindsey started a three-run rally with a perfectly placed bunt.

Shortly afterwards, Hannah Adams followed up with a full-count walk to set up an opportunity for Kendyl Lindaman to break the game open. Lindaman, despite falling behind in the count 1-2, blasted a three-run home run off the roof of the bullpen in left field to give Florida a 4-0 lead.

Florida State attempted to rally in the top of the 6th inning and had runners at 2nd and 3rd after a pair of batters reached via hit-by-pitch and Flaherty’s single, but Jaimie Hoover came up clutch in left field for Hightower and the Gators to get out of the jam.

Hoover raced in and slid to snag a sinking fly ball out in left field hit by Sydney Sherrill for the third out to end the threat.

The Gators’ offense struck for one more in the home half 6th inning, thanks to a bases-loaded RBI single from Lindsey to extend the lead out to 5-0.

From there, Hightower closed out the game with a pair of fly-outs for the first two outs, a walk, and a strikeout looking to end the game.

Special report on the Florida Gators gymnastics team:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Top-ranked Gator gymnastics wasn’t in the mood to share.

Even with Florida junior standout Trinity Thomas sidelined due to an injury in warm-ups, the No. 1 Gator gymnastics team put together a winning performance Friday at No. 6 Alabama. Florida took the win 197.425 – 197.225 in front of a physically distanced Coleman Coliseum crowd of 2,055.

Coleman Coliseum is not a site of many Gator victories. Florida is now 3-16 in dual meet action at Alabama, with those wins coming in 1979, 2019 and now 2021.

7-0 SEC SEASON:
Tonight’s win gives Florida its second consecutive undefeated SEC regular-season at 7-0. The 2020 Gator team was the program’s first to post a 7-0 league record.

The league began awarding a SEC regular-season trophy in 2017. This is Florida’s third consecutive SEC regular-season title: 2019 (6-1), 2020 (7-0) and 2021 (7-0).

Beginning in 1992, all league teams met during regular season action. Florida’s was unbeaten in the 2007 season with a 5-0-1 record. That tie? It came when No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Georgia tied at 197.25 on Jan. 28, 2007 in Stegeman Coliseum.

Senseless desecration

On Friday, March 5, 2021, at approximately 8:20 a.m., the Gainesville Police Department’s (GPD) non-emergency dispatch number received a phone call notifying them that the memorial stone for GPD Officer Scott Baird, located at the 1800 block of NW 16th Terrace (Officer Scott Baird Boulevard), had been destroyed.

A GPD officer responded to the scene and discovered the stone had been smashed into several pieces.

The memorial stone was originally placed there by Gainesville neighbors a few years after Officer Scott Baird was tragically killed while trying to move a batting cage out of the roadway. GPD officers, family, and friends recently gathered on February 12, 2021 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Officer Baird’s line-of-duty death.

Great post to consider!

Something worthy of reposting::

It’s not the police who need to be retrained, it’s the public. We have grown into a mouthy, mobile phone wielding, vulgar, uncivil society with no personal responsibility and the attitude of ‘it’s the other person’s fault, you owe me’. A society where children grow up with no boundaries or knowledge or concern for civil society and personal responsibility.

When an officer says “Put your hands up,” then put your hands up! Don’t reach for something in your pocket, your lap, your seat. There’s plenty of reason for a police officer to feel threatened, there have been multiple assaults and ambushes on police officers lately. Comply with requests from the officer, have your day in court. Don’t mouth off, or fight, or refuse to comply… that escalates the situation.

Police officers are our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. They’re black, white, brown, all colors, all ethnicities, all faiths, male and female, they are us. They see the worst side of humanity… the raped children, the bloody mangled bodies of traffic victims, the bruised and battered victims of domestic violence, homicide victims, body parts… day after day.

They work holidays while we have festive meals with our families. They miss school events with their kids, birthdays, anniversaries, all those special occasions that we take for granted. They work in all types of weather, under dangerous conditions, for relatively low pay.

They have extensive training, but they are human. When there are numerous attacks on them, they become hyper vigilant for a reason, they have become targets. When a police officer encounters any person… any person, whether at a traffic stop, a street confrontation, an arrest, whatever… that situation has the potential to become life threatening. You, Mr & Mrs/Miss Civilian, also have the responsibility of keeping the situation from getting out of control.

Many law enforcement officers are Veterans. They’ve been in service to this nation most of their lives, whether on the battlefield or protecting us here at home. They are the only thing that stands between us and anarchy in the streets.

If you want to protect your child, teach them respect.”

🏀 Congrats Tre Mann 🏀

Florida sophomore point guard Tre Mann is the SEC’s Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The Gainesville native averaged 20 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.5 steals in wins at Auburn and at Kentucky last week.

Mann became the only Gator dating back to 1970 to lead the team in points and rebounds in back-to-back wins with both games on the road.

Mann started the week with his first career double-double, posting 19 points and 13 rebounds at Auburn. Mann started fast with 14 points in the first 11:30 of the game, which helped the Gators jump out to a quick 18-6 lead. His 13 rebounds also marked the most by a Gator in any game this season.

On Saturday, he posted 21 points and eight rebounds in Florida’s win at Kentucky. Mann scored 11 of the Gators’ final 20 points in the game, including the game-sealing free throws with 10 seconds left. He totaled 14 of his 21 points in the second half.
